Happy Birthday Santa Cruz!

Do any of you know what September 24 is? No, I’m not talking about Cambodia’s Constitution Day or the birth of Winston Churchill’s daughter. I’m talking about Santa Cruz’s 201st birthday!

Like so many of my days, I had no idea what to expect when I got up in the morning. (One of the joys and challenges of being a language learning is that so many of the details of life here escape me. I know have a general idea of what’s going on but any specifics usually zip over my head before I can catch them. I figure it makes life more interesting that way.)

In the evening, after buying Santa Cruz shirts so I didn’t look like the only ‘gringa’ in the room, we went to church to celebrate with everyone else. The evening was a mix between a church service and a talent show with worship music,

and a song done on recorders by some of the girls from Talita Cumi, the children’s home where I work.

Half way through the program, I was suddenly pulled into the show during my host-uncle’s ‘companero’ dance. On the other hand, I can’t think of a better way to wish Santa Cruz a happy anniversary than a Cruzena (Santa Cruz-ian)
